Brazilian Blowout vs Keratin Complex
We offer both at Hair Xpressions Salon in Houston, but what's the difference?
We get this question a lot, often followed by "which one is better?" and "which one should I get?" Brazilian Blowout hair smoothing treatment and Coppola's Keratin Complex treatment are both popular services for achieving smoother, frizz-free hair, but there are some key differences in terms of their formulation, how they are applied and processed, and the results you can expect. Here are the main differences between the two treatments.
Is the Brazilian Blowout formula that much different than Keratin Complex?
Yes, actually. The formulation and its underlying technology is one of the main differences that sets these two lines apart. The Brazilian Blowout is known for its polymer system which creates a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. Coppola's Keratin Complex treatment utilizes a blend of keratin, amino acids, and other conditioning agents to repair and smooth the hair.
Do they use similar chemicals?
Brazilian Blowout contains a solution with a lower pH that bonds amino acids to the hair shaft. It does not necessarily rely on formaldehyde, but some formulations may contain low levels of it. Keratin Complex typically contains higher levels of formaldehyde or a similar aldehyde compound (like glyoxylic acid), which helps to bond the keratin to the hair and create smoothness.
Brazilian Blowout process vs Keratin Complex
Brazilian Blowout is often quicker to apply and involves blow drying the product into the hair, followed by flat ironing to seal in the formula. When we do a Keratin Complex treatment, the application process is more involved and usually takes longer than the Brazilian Blowout. It also involves blow-drying and flat ironing, but with Keratin Complex, we do multiple passes to ensure the formula bonds effectively to the hair.
Will I get the same results with a Brazilian Blowout & Keratin Complex?
Actually, you can expect different results for each line, depending on your hair type and texture, one may be a better fit for you than the other. For example, the Brazilian Blowout provides more of a smoothing and frizz-reducing effect rather than a complete straightening of the hair. Your hair will maintain more natural movement and volume.
On the other hand, the Keratin Complex gives you more significant straightening results, particularly on frizzy or curly hair. It can last longer in terms of keeping the hair straight and frizz-free.
Is the after care the same for both lines?
You'll notice some striking differences in the after care. Brazilian Blowout generally requires less stringent aftercare compared to Keratin Complex. With a Brazilian Blowout, you can wash and style your hair immediately after treatment without any down time. However, with a Keratin Complex, there is a waiting period before your next shampoo (typically 72 hours) to allow the treatment to fully set for maximum results.
Which hair smoothing treatment lasts longer?
With a a Brazilian Blowout, results can last up to 12 weeks with proper care and maintenance. But a Keratin Complex can last much longer, up to 3-5 months with the proper home care.
Does Keratin Complex cost the same as Brazilian Blowout?
Brazilian Blowout tends to be less expensive than Keratin Complex due to quicker application times and less product usage. With Keratin Complex, you might pay a bit more because of the longer application process and more product used.
Most salons will charge these two services at different price points. At Hair Xpressions Salon, we have the same starting at price for both of these services. The total cost will depend on length and density, which translates to how much product we need and the amount of time it will take.
